MALE vs FEMALE

There's a common belief that female dogs are easier to handle: they tend to be gentler, more tolerant, and generally sweeter. However, with Thai Ridgebacks, it’s a bit more complex. One key thing to remember is that Thai Ridgebacks operate under a matriarchy – the female usually takes the lead, while the male follows suit.

While males can be more direct and quicker to show their displeasure by growling or baring their teeth, they’re actually quite affectionate and tend to be more attached to their owners. They might not be too keen on strangers or fully grasp why guests in the house are necessary, but they’re incredibly loyal and devoted to their family. Males also tend to be more responsive during training, picking up commands quickly and eager to do what’s asked once they see the benefit. They do enjoy testing their strength with other dogs, but once that’s settled, they usually drop the issue. They mature mentally a bit slower, around 3-4 years old, and go through more phases of fear and uncertainty. Because of this, they need consistent character guidance and strong socialization, which ideally starts with the breeder.

Now, when it comes to females, they can be quite the little manipulators. If something doesn’t sit right with them, they’ll find a clever way to let you know, often testing your patience in the process. It’s important to keep a close eye on them, especially when they’re playing with other dogs – one minute they’re having fun, and the next, they might be on the hunt or have a true 'let's kill that dog' intentions. Females tend to get along better with dogs of the opposite sex, but they’re not usually fond of larger, dark-colored dogs. They also have a stronger hunting instinct, and when off-leash, they’re more likely to wander farther than males before coming back.

Training a female can be a bit of an adventure. Sometimes they’re just not in the mood, or maybe the treats aren’t quite right, the environment isn’t ideal, or it’s simply a day where they feel like challenging you a bit. But females are generally more tolerant of young kids and often enjoy having guests around. They mature faster than males, and after their first heat, their personality changes slightly, but not dramatically.

To wrap it up, I’d suggest paying close attention to the parents’ bloodlines before bringing a Thai Ridgeback puppy home. A puppy’s temperament and trainability are highly influenced by their lineage, so it’s worth doing a bit of homework on the parents and grandparents.
